BED
BUGS
The
common bed bug is fast becoming the most worrisome indoor pest of
this generation. They can be found in almost any habitable location,
with outbreaks in hotels and motels being the most newsworthy. Apartment
buildings afford near perfect living conditions for bed bugs. Large
numbers of occupants live close to one another; and tenant turnover
is constant, affording many opportunities for bed bugs to be transported
in and/or out on beds, couches, recliners, chairs, furniture, picture
frames, etc.
Bed
bugs, both adults and nymphs, have been found residing on beds,
in furniture such as dressers or nightstands, on floors, walls,
behind baseboards, on ceilings, and behind wall mounted mirrors
and picture frames. Some of these sites have been several feet from
sleeping areas, so it is vitally important to inspect for bed bugs
well beyond the bed itself. Young bed bug nymphs are tiny and the
eggs are barely noticeable.
The
bed bug hides in cracks and crevices during the day, preferring
to rest on wood and paper surfaces instead of stone and plaster.
It comes out at night to feed on its host, and the meal requires
three to ten minutes and usually goes unnoticed by the victim. After
feeding, the bite site may become inflamed.
Under
ideal conditions bed bug eggs hatch in about seven days and the
nymphs molt five times, taking a blood meal between each molt. Development
from egg to adult is 21 days and the adult can live for almost a
year.
